Join us for “Stories in Stone,” a one-hour guided cemetery tour encompassing the Military Cemetery and Lakeside Cemetery in Sackets Harbor on Saturday, Oct 18, at 10 am.

The tour will cast a spotlight on some of the individuals and families buried in each cemetery and their significance to our local history. The Sackets Harbor Historical Society and the Sackets Harbor Heritage Area Advisory Committee are presenting this tour.

The Military Cemetery

Beginning at the village’s Military Cemetery, this year’s tour will feature brief presentations on:

  • Brigadier General Zebulon Montgomery Pike
  • Members of the 24th Infantry, an “all-black” regiment
  • Members of 9th Infantry, who served in the Philippine-American War

Lakeside Cemetery

Next, the tour will cross Dodge Avenue and enter Lakeside Cemetery, maintained by the Town of Hounsfield. The Lakeside Cemetery presentations will highlight:

  • Village Founder Augustus Sacket and his family
  • Joshua Pickering, a middle class ship builder, and his family
  • Colonel Elisha Camp, one of the village’s first residents, and his family
  • Samuel Guthrie, a local physician who discovered chloroform and invented the percussion cap

Please note that both cemeteries have uneven terrain, so please wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk about one mile.

Also note, the cemetery tour will proceed rain or shine. In case of inclement weather, the tour group will meet at the Old Stone Chapel on East Main Street for the presentations. If we have to relocate, both the Historical Society and the village’s Visit Sackets Harbor accounts will post updates on Facebook.

Tickets for the cemetery tour are $5 per person, and the tour is limited to 20 people. Tickets must be purchased in advance via our Square site. All proceeds benefit the Historical Society’s preservation efforts and educational programming.
